BYD surpasses Tesla in Europe EV sales for the first time
Chinese automaker BYD has overtaken Tesla in European EV sales for the first time, according to 3DNews citing data from Jato Dynamics.

In April 2025, BYD registered 7,231 electric vehicles in Europe, a 169% increase year-over-year. This pushed BYD into the top 10 EV brands in the region for the first time.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s registrations fell by 49%, down to 7,165 units in April. BYD surpassed Tesla by just 66 vehicles.

Volkswagen remains the top EV brand in Europe with 23,514 registrations (+61%), followed by BMW (14,867 units), Skoda, Audi, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Hyundai, and finally BYD and Tesla.

BYD’s European growth is also driven by plug-in hybrid sales, which are not subject to the same tariffs as fully electric vehicles. Including these, BYD’s total sales in Europe grew 359% in April.

One of its most affordable EVs, the Dolphin Surf (also known as Seagull), starts at €20,000 with a 30 kWh battery. However, without incentives, it can cost up to €23,000 — a price point where local consumers often opt for familiar brands like the Renault 5. This highlights how EU tariffs help protect domestic auto manufacturers.
