The world scientific community has lost another great person. American biologist and Nobel laureate James Watson, who discovered the structure of DNA, has passed away at the age of 97, The New York Times reports.
According to reports, he died in a hospital in New York. The scholar's son officially confirmed his father's death.
James Watson, along with British biophysicist Francis Crick, made one of the most important discoveries in human history in 1953, first identifying the double helix structure of DNA. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1962.
Watson led the Human Genome Project in 1990, playing a key role in creating a DNA map. The scientist left a huge scientific legacy in the field of biology and genetics.
However, in 2019, he was stripped of all honorary titles due to his controversial statements about racial differences.
James Watson will forever remain in the history of science as the founder of modern genetics.
