“Hearing voices” is seen as a positive phenomenon in some places

In Western medicine, a person hearing “voices” is considered a sign of mental illness. However, in some parts of the world this is not seen as bad, but rather as a positive phenomenon that gives guidance or protects a person from danger.

Research shows that many healthy people also admit to hearing unknown voices from time to time. For example, in India and Ghana such voices are often seen as the voice of God or family members, and they give advice in everyday life.

In the US, however, patients often describe the voices as negative or frightening. As a result, they regard this condition as an illness. In India and Ghana, on the other hand, voices are evaluated more positively, so people view such experiences differently.

According to scientists, the society and culture in which a person grows up determine how they perceive such experiences. Therefore, in some places “hearing voices” is considered not bad, but ordinary or even useful.
