In recent years, although phone use in our lives has become almost unrestricted, American scientists have conducted a study revealing a worrying aspect for health. According to research carried out in Boston throughout 2024, sitting on the toilet for long periods while using a smartphone poses a serious risk to human health.
Experts say that when a person gets distracted by a phone and sits on the toilet longer than necessary, it puts excessive pressure on the blood vessels in the rectum. If this habit is repeated frequently, the ligaments and tissues weaken, the vessels swell, and painful lumps form. This condition is commonly known as hemorrhoids.
The study involved 125 adult volunteers. They filled out a special questionnaire providing information about lifestyle, diet, physical activity, and toilet habits. It was revealed that 66% of participants use their phones in the toilet. Nearly half of them were found to have signs of hemorrhoids during colonoscopy.
It was determined that taking a phone into the toilet can increase the risk of the disease by 46%. Scientists identified prolonged sitting on the toilet as the main cause. Smartphones make people lose track of time, and this creates a serious health problem.
Specialists gave simple recommendations to reduce the risk: leave the phone outside the bathroom, try not to sit on the toilet for more than 5 minutes, and if the process takes longer, stand up, take a break, and then return.
According to the scientists’ conclusion, such simple precautionary measures can protect a person from a serious and unpleasant disease.
