New syrups detected causing child mortality in India

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that some medicines produced in India contain a highly dangerous substance for human health - diethylene glycol (DEG).

According to the organization, the syrups COLDRIF, Respifresh TR, and ReLife contain this toxic substance, which are produced by Sresan Pharmaceutical, Rednex Pharmaceuticals, and Shape Pharma.

The Indian Center for Drug Standards Control (CDSCO) notified the WHO at the beginning of October. The report notes that kidney injuries were recorded in children who received syrups, and at least 22 children died.

The government has issued an order to immediately stop the production and sale of these drugs. The CDSCO added that these poisonous syrups were not exported abroad, and no cases of illegal trade have been identified so far.
