Can cancer be treated without surgery?
Ultrasound technology was once used only to see inside the human body, but now it is also being applied to treat cancer. Jen Xu, a scientist from the University of Michigan (USA), has developed a new method called “histotripsy.” This technology uses high-frequency sound waves to mechanically break down tumors without cutting into the body.

Histotripsy was approved in the United States in 2023 for the treatment of liver tumors. Studies have shown that the method achieved successful results in 95% of cases. The process does not expose the body to heat, and bleeding or pain is rarely observed. The most convenient part — patients can return home the same day after treatment.

During the procedure, sound waves are directed at the tumor. They create microscopic bubbles that burst within microseconds, breaking apart the tumor tissue. The body’s immune system then naturally removes the damaged cells. The procedure lasts several hours and usually needs to be done only once.

However, histotripsy does have some limitations. For example, bone or air can block the passage of sound waves, making it unsuitable for tumors in the lungs or bones. Although long-term results are not yet fully known, scientists are testing it for kidney and pancreatic tumors as well.

Experts believe that ultrasound-based treatments could make it possible to treat cancer safely and painlessly in the future. New technologies offer patients a hopeful and less harmful way to heal.
