Despite the high level of interest in the revamped Club World Cup, La Liga president Javier Tebas has spoken out strongly against the tournament. According to Tebas, this competition poses a serious threat not only to national leagues but also to the entire European football system.
In his interview, Tebas demanded that FIFA put an end to any attempts to further develop the tournament and even called for its complete cancellation. “There is no need for yet another competition that just brings clubs and players more money. This model blocks financial resources in the audiovisual rights sector. We must preserve the current system and hold the tournament as before — on a single rest day. There are no free dates,” Tebas said.
The La Liga president, who watched the matches himself, described Chelsea’s game against Los Angeles as a pre-season friendly: “In the 25 minutes I watched, I saw no sense of seriousness.”
