Khamzat Chimaev became the new UFC champion

Born in Chechnya and currently representing the UAE, Khamzat Chimaev defeated South African fighter Dricus du Plessis to claim the UFC middleweight title (up to 84 kg), reports Daily.afisha.

The fight took place in Chicago at UFC 319. It lasted five rounds and ended with a unanimous decision in favor of Chimaev — 50-44, 50-44, 50-44.

“I am very happy. I’m waiting for my fee from Dana White (UFC president — Ed.). I didn’t prepare any special plan for the fight. I just moved forward and worked until the end. My opponent is a real African lion, a very tough fighter. I respect him,” Chimaev told reporters.

For reference, during his teenage years Khamzat moved with his family from Russia to Sweden. Since September 2023, he has been competing under the UAE flag instead of Sweden.

In total, the 31-year-old athlete has fought 15 MMA bouts, all of which ended in his victory. He has been competing in the UFC octagon since 2020.
