Former Real Madrid legend and specialist Jorge Valdano expressed a sharp but honest opinion about the club's current situation. He emphasized that the Madrid giant's excessive reliance on Kylian Mbappé this season has already become apparent.
The 26-year-old French star saved the Madrid side from defeat in the final match against Girona (1-1). He accurately converted a penalty, scoring the decisive goal for his team and further solidifying his La Liga top scorer position.
Valdano shared the following thoughts with Madrid Universal:
"Every fan and specialist should ask themselves one question: 'If it weren't for Mbappé, where would Real Madrid be this season?' This question itself suggests the answer," said the Argentinian specialist.
The fact is that under Xabi Alonso, Mbappé has now become the team's almost sole regular goalscorer. The French striker made 19 appearances in all competitions of the season, scoring 23 goals and providing 3 assists. These indicators are one of the main reasons why the team is still at a high level.
However, according to Valdano, this level of single-player dependency is a dangerous trend for elite clubs. As the Madrid team extends the season, they need to expand the scope of attacking options and avoid overloading a single player with the burden of teamwork.
Mbappé's unstoppable form is a source of pride for Real Madrid, but there's also a need for additional creativity and variety in the team's play. This will be one of the biggest challenges facing Real Madrid.
