Marseille Defeats Monaco, Delivers Another Blow to Rival

In the final match of Round 16 of the French Championship, Marseille defeated Monaco 1-0 on their home turf. The hosts showed activity right from the early moments of the game.

Emerson delivered a cross from the left wing to the center of the penalty area where Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang attempted a shot amidst intense competition, but the goalkeeper deflected the ball, resulting in a corner kick. Monaco also created opportunities in response: Aleksandr Golovin directed a shot towards the top left corner just outside the penalty area, but the ball did not hit the net.

Mason Greenwood cut inside from the right wing and aimed for the far corner, but his shot went just wide of the post. In another chance for the visitors, Golovin passed to Maghnes Akliouche, who delivered the ball from the left side to Takumi Minamino.

The Japanese player took a one-touch shot, but the goalkeeper easily secured the ball. Following a pass from Golovin, Folarin Balogun directed a shot towards the bottom right corner inside the penalty box, but the defender near the goal line intercepted it.

At the start of the second half, Lamin Kamara scored for Marseille, but the referees ruled it offside. Marseille also created dangerous moments: Greenwood crossed to the center of the penalty area, and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s first-touch shot towards the far corner was deflected by the defender.

Aubameyang, advancing from the right wing, shot towards the far corner, but the goalkeeper reached the ball and cleared it out of play. Subsequently, Jordan Teze set up Balogun for an attack, and the forward chipped the ball over the goalkeeper; however, this goal was also disallowed for offside.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 82nd minute. Højbjerg delivered a low pass from the left wing into the penalty area, and Greenwood scored with a single attempt, directing the ball under the crossbar to make it 1-0.

Golovin’s teammate George Ilenikhena attempted to equalize in the closing moments: the goalkeeper saved his shot, and the follow-up effort aimed towards the near post was blocked by a defender. Aleksandr Golovin played on the field for 72 minutes.

Monaco has suffered defeat in five of their last six matches in Ligue 1. In the tournament standings, Monaco is currently in 9th place, while Marseille is ranked among the top three.
