In an interview with the Italian press, the head coach of the Uzbekistan national team, Fabio Cannavaro, openly expressed his opinion about the problems that have accumulated over the years in his native football. The 2006 World Cup winner emphasized that one of the most pressing issues in today's Italian football is the shortage of local players, especially young Italian players.
According to Cannavaro, the excessive reliance on foreign players in Serie A clubs is leading to serious consequences for the national team. Young players who have not gained enough experience on the field cannot become a competitive reserve for the national team in the future. This leaves coaches with limited opportunities in forming the squad.
The specialist noted that he is watching the current Italian championship even more closely than before. In his opinion, modern Italian football is overly preoccupied with complex tactical solutions. The playing style based on personal security across the entire field seems to be used by almost all teams.
Cannavaro did not hide the fact that Jean-Pierre highly valued Gasperini's work style and treated him with great respect. However, he also drew attention to an important aspect: tactics are being prioritized, and the player's individual technique is being pushed to the background. This negatively impacts the traditional strengths of Italian football.
The expert, comparing the past with the present, gave a very touching example. According to him, every time he saw players called up to the national team before the 2006 World Cup, he could be amazed. Today, it's noticeable that many players are being recruited to the national team without yet fully demonstrating themselves.
Cannavaro compared the young players to a house under construction. He emphasized that if the foundation is not strong, the building will not be stable either. In youth, technique must come first, while tactics come later. It is in this direction that a football player is fully formed.
It is worth noting that Fabio Cannavaro was appointed head coach of the Uzbekistan national team in October of this year. Currently, he is busy preparing the team for the 2026 World Cup. At the World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, our national team will compete in the same group as the teams of Portugal and Colombia. The fourth participant of Group "K" will be determined after the playoff matches.
Cannavaro's open and critical views lead to important conclusions not only for Italy but for world football as a whole.
