In England, only one match was played on Boxing Day: at Old Trafford, Manchester United hosted Newcastle. The visitors had more possession and took more than ten corners, but the hosts had more shots, and one of them opened the scoring and then allowed them to hold on to the result. In the 24th minute, the ball was thrown into the penalty area from a throw-in on the left flank. Jacob Murphy failed to clear it far, and Patrick Dorgu from 14 metres accurately sent the dropping ball into the bottom-left corner — 1:0. After the break, on a counter-attack, Benjamin Šeško burst into the left side of the box and fired a powerful shot into the near top corner, but the crossbar saved Newcastle. Then Lewis Hall won the ball in an area close to the centre circle and struck powerfully from about 24 metres, but again the ball hit the crossbar. After a left-sided corner, the ball reached Fabian Schär at the far side of the six-yard box. He shot, but the ball hit Lisandro Martínez’s hand — no penalty was given. Then Martínez played a long, accurate pass to Diogo Dalot; Dalot went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but eventually lifted the ball over the crossbar. The match ended 1:0.
