Mertesacker explained his decision by saying that Arsenal has always held a special place for him. He stressed that he is grateful for the trust shown by the club and said the time has come to try new directions and continue developing. The German specialist added that he will focus on finishing the season strongly and will keep working on developing young talents. Mertesacker has held the role since 2018.
During his career, Mertesacker played not only for Arsenal but also for Hannover and Werder. In 2014, he became a world champion with the Germany national team.
