On Monday, Real Madrid officially announced that Xabi Alonso had been relieved of his duties as head coach. Soon after, new details about the Spaniard’s departure began to emerge.
According to The Athletic, after the Spanish Super Cup final Alonso was invited to the club’s training base. There he met with Real Madrid CEO Jose Angel Sanchez, who informed him that the partnership would be terminated.
The source says Alonso did not take the decision lightly. He stated that he considered the dismissal unfair and wrong, and said he disagreed with the verdict. Most notably, Alonso is said to have pointed to the club’s internal “Galacticos” power culture as one of the reasons for his exit. In other words, the presence of certain power centers and spheres of influence within the squad negatively affected the working process.
For the record: Xabi Alonso took charge of Los Blancos on June 1, 2025. That means he barely had time to build a long-term project at Real before quickly finding himself at the center of intense pressure and internal conflicts.
Now there is only one key question: is Real’s problem only about results, or also about the internal environment? Big clubs have big names — but if those big names operate in a no-mercy mode, the coach is left with no room to breathe.
