Xabi Alonso close to a return: negotiations intensify in Europe

According to FootballTransfers, Spanish coach Xabi Alonso is preparing to return to coaching activity this summer. He has held talks with several clubs in order to choose a new workplace.
Among the clubs whose representatives Alonso has spoken with are the owners of “Manchester City”. He has also communicated with officials from “Manchester United”, as well as Portuguese clubs “Benfica”, “Sporting”, and “Porto”.
The 44-year-old specialist has not yet made a final decision. However, negotiations are already underway, and he is seriously interested in returning to coaching in the near future.
Alonso has been without a job since his unexpected dismissal from “Real Madrid” head coach position in January 2026. Despite this, he is still regarded as one of the most promising young coaches in European football.
Meanwhile, “Manchester City” is going through an important stage of the season. The team will face a decisive championship match against “Arsenal” on April 26. Questions about Pep Guardiola’s future also remain open.
If Alonso is indeed being considered as a potential replacement for Guardiola, the club’s sporting director Hugo Viana may speed up negotiations before the summer. This would allow the club to prepare its transfer strategy in advance under a new head coach.
