Infantino's attempt to reconcile Israel and Palestine sparks controversy

An unexpected and tense situation has emerged on the international football stage. During the FIFA Congress, a contentious incident occurred between Palestinian and Israeli representatives in the presence of organization president Gianni Infantino.
During the event, Infantino attempted to symbolically bring the parties together by calling on the heads of the two federations to shake hands. This step was intended to promote peace and mutual understanding through sports. However, the situation did not unfold as expected.
Jibril Rajoub, president of the Palestinian Football Association, rejected the proposal and left the stage with a sharp statement, saying, "We are suffering." His action drew the attention of those in the hall and sparked discussion.
Later, Rajoub expressed his position more explicitly, stating, "I have no intention of shaking hands with a representative of a fascist government that is committing genocide." This statement once again demonstrated how political and humanitarian issues intersect at international sports conferences.
According to experts, although the sports arena is often viewed as a space that should be free from political disagreements, in some cases, global issues directly impact it. This incident served as a clear example of that.
Thus, the FIFA president's symbolic initiative for reconciliation failed, and the event is being widely discussed by the international community. Now the question: can sports truly remain independent of politics? Time will provide the answer.
