Joao Palhinha agrees to salary cut to return to Sporting CP

Portuguese midfielder Joao Palhinha has expressed his willingness to make a financial sacrifice to return to his former club, Sporting CP, during the current summer transfer window. The Bayern Munich player, who spent last season on loan at Tottenham, has become the Lisbon club's primary target ahead of the 2026-2027 season. This is reported by Goal.com .

Sporting's management and head coach Rui Borges see the 30-year-old as the ideal replacement for Morten Hjulmand, who is expected to leave the team. Although Palhinha's transfer value is high, the player's desire to return home and his loyalty to his former club could play a decisive role in negotiations.

Currently under contract with Bayern until 2028, Palhinha earns approximately 9 million euros per year. Since this is a very high figure for Portuguese clubs, the player has agreed to significantly reduce his salary to facilitate the transfer. Sporting is currently discussing the transfer fee or a loan deal with an option to buy with the German giants.

In a difficult season for Tottenham, where the team barely survived in the English Premier League, Palhinha was one of the best players. He made 45 appearances across all competitions, recording 7 goals and 2 assists. Despite head coach Roberto De Zerbi wanting to sign the player permanently for 26 million pounds, A Bola reports that the player is leaning towards a return to Portugal.
