US scientists have, for the first time, taken DNA from a human skin cell and fertilized it with sperm, creating an embryo. This method could help people who cannot become pregnant.
The process is not yet fully developed and will take a long time before it can be used in clinics.
The method involves placing the nucleus of a skin cell into a donor egg, processing the egg with half of its DNA, and fertilizing it with sperm. So far, experiments have created embryos no older than six days.
Experts say this is an important scientific breakthrough but stress the need for open discussion with the public about safety and ethical issues.
