Some users of ChatGPT now face the requirement to verify their identity through a passport to use the platform.
According to the information, if the service suspects that the user is under 18 years old, it will ask them to verify their personal information through a passport. Discussion of "adult-only" topics is restricted until the review is completed.
Interestingly, in some cases, this requirement is applied even to older users. For example, a 30-year-old user also said that the platform was asked for confirmation.
OpenAI confirmed that this feature is being implemented in stages and is currently being tested mainly in English-speaking regions. According to the company, the main goal of the news is to comply with age restrictions and strengthen the protection of minors from potentially inappropriate content.
At the same time, OpenAI emphasized that the processing of passport data is carried out safely: the data is encrypted, used only for age determination, and the documents are not kept open.
Online audiences react differently to the news. Some support the initiative as a step towards ensuring digital security and complying with global rules, while others criticize the mechanism for malfunctioning in certain situations, and adults are also facing unjustified restrictions.
OpenAI added that the current age determination system is in the testing phase. The company is analyzing user reviews and considering other age verification options - methods such as bank cards or electronic digital identifiers.
That is, the new procedure of the platform has been introduced as an experiment for now, and changes and updates may be made to it in the future.
