Air France to protect 74 aircraft from GPS interference
Air France plans to invest several million euros to protect its aircraft from disruptions in satellite navigation. Over the next three years, the airline will equip part of its fleet with devices that enhance resilience against GPS signal interference, starting with 14 Airbus A350s and later extending to all 60 Boeing 777s. This decision comes in response to increasing incidents of GPS signal disruptions on routes in Europe and Asia, with the airline expecting improved navigation accuracy and reduced pilot workload as a result. The modernization process is expected to be completed by 2027, with new aircraft being delivered with this system already installed.
Air France intends to spend several million euros to protect its aircraft from satellite navigation interference. The carrier plans to equip a portion of its fleet over the next three years with hardware that increases resilience against GPS signal jamming and spoofing. This was reported by Ixbt.com xabar.
The modernization will primarily affect Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft. The first 14 A350 airliners will be equipped with MMR receivers from Collins Aerospace between the end of 2026 and early 2027.
Following this, similar equipment will be installed on all 60 of the company's Boeing 777 aircraft.
This process is expected to be completed in 2027. New aircraft for Air France will be delivered with this system already installed.
The decision is linked to an increase in GPS disruption incidents, particularly on routes across Europe and Asia.
The airline expressed confidence that the new system will reduce the workload on pilots. It will also improve navigation accuracy and mitigate risks in areas where signals may be unstable or intentionally jammed.
There is a possibility for further modernization of this equipment in the future.
