Virtual Troyka card: NFC payment to launch by 2026

According to the Moscow Department of Transport, the virtual Troyka card has been used over 16 million times in two years. Launched in May 2024, the service allows passengers to pay for public transport directly via smartphone. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .

Currently, the payment system operates using QR-code technology. Passengers simply need to hold their smartphone screen with an active QR-code up to the turnstile scanner or scan the code on the validator. Deputy Mayor of Moscow Maxim Liksutov noted that the virtual card is an eco-friendly payment method that eliminates the need for cash and plastic cards.

Throughout the service's operation, users have topped up their virtual accounts more than 3.8 million times. The functionality of the virtual Troyka is identical to the plastic card: it retains free transfers between the metro, the Moscow Central Circle, and surface transport.

In the future, the system is planned to integrate NFC payment functionality. This feature is currently being tested and will first be available to Android smartphone users. The NFC payment service is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
