127-ton magnetic circuit for MSC-230 cyclotron tested in Russia

Rosatom specialists have successfully developed and tested a magnetic circuit (electromagnet) designed for the MSC-230 medical superconducting cyclotron. This device is one of the most critical components of the cyclotron, reports Ixbt.com. reports .

The launch of the MSC-230 will enable the implementation of proton flash therapy in Russia. This is a modern method of radiation therapy where an ultra-high dose of radiation is delivered to a tumor very quickly and with high precision.

The new technology increases treatment efficacy while significantly reducing damage to healthy tissues surrounding the tumor. This is an important step in the fight against cancer.

Tests conducted on geometric accuracy and the performance of the high-yoke lifting system confirmed all critical parameters of the magnetic circuit. Specifically, the required distance between sectors and their parallelism fully met the established standards.

Kirill Smirnov, Director of the Rosatom institute NIIEFA, noted that this achievement marks a new stage in the technology of linear accelerators and cyclotrons.
