Ford and Apple Partnership: Future EVs to be Equipped with Apple Maps

US auto giant Ford plans to make extensive use of Apple technology in its next-generation electric vehicles (EVs). The company has become the first partner to integrate the new MapKit for Automotive software toolkit provided by Apple into its system. This move is a strategic choice for Ford, not only to improve its software but also to gain an advantage in the technological race against competitors like Tesla. This is according to Techcrunch.com reports.

Apple Maps will no longer be just a CarPlay feature that mirrors an iPhone screen to a car monitor, but will become a navigation system deeply integrated into the EV's onboard computer. This innovation will debut in Ford's mid-size electric pickup, expected to hit the market in 2027 with a price tag of approximately $30,000. This model will be built on Ford's entirely new universal EV platform (UEV).

Technological Capabilities and Efficiency

The integration of Apple Maps offers drivers a range of conveniences. In addition to displaying real-time traffic, road accidents, and detailed maps, the system calculates routes specifically for electric vehicles. Most importantly, the navigation system connects to the vehicle's battery status and manages the preconditioning function to bring the battery to the optimal temperature before reaching a charging station. This significantly reduces charging time.

Through this partnership, Ford also intends to improve its BlueCruise driver-assistance system. Updated BlueCruise, powered by Apple Maps data, will be capable of fully controlling the vehicle on highways, including independent navigation of entrance and exit lanes. The company aims to achieve "eyes-off" autonomous driving levels by 2028.

New Manufacturing Philosophy

Ford is moving away from its century-old traditions and adopting a new approach to electric vehicle manufacturing. The new platform will serve as a foundation not only for pickups but also for sedans, crossovers, and even commercial vans. Using aluminum unicasting in the production process reduces the number of parts and speeds up assembly, which ultimately helps lower the price of the EV.

Although the terms of this commercial agreement between Apple and Ford have not been disclosed, experts see it as proof of the growing role of software in the automotive industry. The Apple Maps system can also be connected to smart home technologies. For example, it will be possible to automatically perform actions such as opening garage doors and turning on lights as the driver approaches home.

At a time when interest in electric vehicles is growing in the Uzbekistan market, the efforts of brands like Ford to work with Apple on affordable and smart models are expected to expand access to modern technologies for local consumers in the future.
