Patreon announces layoff of 20 percent of its staff

The popular creator platform Patreon is cutting 20% of its workforce to optimize operations and adapt to market changes. This decision, announced by CEO Jack Conte, will result in 93 employees losing their jobs. This marks one of the largest layoffs in the platform's recent history, according to Techcrunch.com reports.

In an official letter to employees, Jack Conte stated that while Patreon remains stable in its core business, rapid changes in the technology market require a review of the cost structure. He described this "painful" decision as a necessary step to ensure the company's long-term sustainability. The process aims to streamline the company's structure and focus on key priorities.

The impact of AI and the human factor

In the announcement regarding the layoffs, Jack Conte also addressed the role of AI technologies in the industry. He noted that while AI has fundamentally changed the tech industry, Patreon does not intend to replace employees with robots. "We are not making these changes because we believe AI can replace humans," the CEO emphasized.

Patreon's strategy is based on human creativity and interaction. Conte acknowledged that no matter how much new technological tools evolve, they cannot replace human skill, critical thinking, and emotional connection. Nevertheless, because AI has changed workflows, product development, and communication methods, the company has been forced to update its operating system.

To support the laid-off employees, Patreon promises to pay severance equal to at least 16 weeks of salary. Additionally, employees will receive one extra week of pay for every year worked, health insurance through the end of the year, and a $1,500 stipend to purchase a new laptop.

Copyright protection measures

Patreon has also been taking active steps to protect creator rights recently. Specifically, last week the company announced the launch of an AI bot blocking system in partnership with Cloudflare. This measure is aimed at stopping the unauthorized scraping of creators' work for training AI models.

It is worth noting that this is not the first such case for Patreon. In 2022, the platform cut 17% of its staff and was forced to close its offices in Berlin and Dublin. Current layoffs are part of a general trend in the tech world, as many IT giants are following this path to increase economic efficiency.
