Spotify Expands AI-Powered Tool for Creating Track Remixes

A new phase is beginning in the streaming services market: according to ixbt.com, Spotify announced during a briefing on its second-quarter results that it is preparing to introduce a product allowing users to create AI-powered remixes and covers based on music by their favorite artists. The new project aims to give music fans unique creative freedom while creating legal mechanisms that fully respect copyright. This was reported by Techcrunch.com reports .

As part of the initiative, the company announced that it had signed an agreement with Merlin, a licensing partner for independent labels and distributors, in addition to Universal Music Group (UMG). Thanks to the deal, creative works by artists who have agreed to participate and whose labels belong to the Merlin network will be eligible for inclusion in the AI product. This will significantly expand the catalog available to users in the future.

A New Legal Approach to AI Music

Recently, streaming platforms have faced problems caused by a flood of fake songs created entirely with AI. For example, according to Deezer, more than half of the tracks uploaded daily are AI-generated, a sharp increase from 10 percent at the beginning of this year. However, Spotify executives emphasize that their approach is completely different, focusing on “real artists, not fake artists.”

According to Spotify co-CEO Gustav Söderström, the product the company is developing will be based on the consent of existing artists. “We want artists to be interested in adding their work to this catalog and for people to play around by creating covers and remixes based on their art,” said fellow co-CEO Alex Norström. The project also provides for timely credit for creators, obtaining their consent and, most importantly, ensuring fair compensation for the process.

Future Plans and Monetization

Some details have also emerged about the project’s technical aspects and launch timeline. At the initial stage, a research version of the fan-remix and cover product is expected to be offered to a limited group of users. The tool will not initially require access to the full music catalog and is planned to launch later as a paid add-on service, creating an additional source of income for artists.

The streaming giant emphasizes that this approach is unique in the market and fully legal. Gustav Söderström noted that ordinary generative music will continue to evolve regardless, but said this specialized product is necessary so existing artists can use the AI wave safely and profitably.
