Uzbekistan Adopts Law on Nuclear Civil Liability

Uzbekistan Adopts Law on Nuclear Civil Liability
Uzbekistan has adopted a law on civil liability for nuclear damage, reports NOVA24.
According to the presidential decree, the country has joined the Vienna Convention.

Joining the convention provides the following opportunities:
• Establishing procedures, timelines, and principles for compensating damage caused by incidents at civilian nuclear facilities.
• Clearly defining the responsibilities of nuclear facility operators and creating financial guarantees.
• Increasing trust in the national nuclear safety system, strengthening international cooperation, and complying with standards.

Ratification of the document, in the context of expanding peaceful nuclear energy use, will ensure international recognition of Uzbekistan’s rights and obligations and provide compensation guarantees.

The draft law has been approved by deputies and is awaiting review in the Senate.
