Uzbekistan-2030: New Measures Against Climate Change

"Uzbekistan-2030": New measures against climate change

In the draft “Uzbekistan–2030” strategy, measures to counter the adverse impacts of climate change—including drought, desertification, dust and sand storms, and rising temperatures—are identified as one of the key priority areas. According to the draft, to mitigate these negative outcomes it is planned to improve the quality of hydrometeorological monitoring and forecasting, refine agrometeorological data for agriculture, and strengthen mechanisms for the efficient use of natural resources.

The main target indicators set out in the draft are as follows:

  • Increase the coverage of early warnings about hazardous hydrometeorological events to 100%: This is an important step aimed at protecting the link between people and nature.
  • Increase the reliability of mountain river flow forecasts to 98%: Accurate forecasts play a crucial role in preventing natural disasters.
  • As a measure against desertification, drought, dust and sand storms, and rising temperatures, establish “green cover” — protective forest belts — across a total area of 600,000 hectares: This important project holds a significant place in modern global practice.
  • Increase the reliability of agrometeorological forecasts on crop development and yields to 96%: This is an important step to improve efficiency in agriculture.
  • Reclaim 6,075 hectares of land degraded by mineral extraction: The restoration of natural resources is envisaged.
  • Develop drought- and water-scarcity-resistant crops, as well as high-yield varieties of fruit and grapes adapted to the climate of each region, and increase yields by 30–35%: This is of great importance for boosting efficiency in the agricultural sector.

With clear objectives, the project aims to expand the capacity to assess natural disaster risks in advance and to inform the population in a timely manner. It is also expected to improve forecast accuracy in water resource management and support the adaptation of agriculture to climate risks.

These measures are aimed at improving Uzbekistan’s environmental performance and developing new strategic approaches to climate change, representing one of the country’s first steps toward sustainable development at the global level.
