Shops at bus stops in Tashkent will be removed.

In the city of Tashkent, restrictions will be imposed on retail outlets located around bus stops — according to the city administration, shops at bus stops will be gradually removed.

The city administration explains this decision by referring to international experience: according to modern stop concepts, there should be no commercial facilities within the stop area. The reason is simple — passengers should be able to wait for transport freely and safely, platforms should be sufficiently wide, there should be opportunities to expand them during heavy congestion, and an inclusive environment should also be ensured.

It is reported that a large-scale inventory of public transport infrastructure in the capital has been conducted. At the first stage, a distance of 100 km was covered, and more than 360 stops and 190 large and small intersections were inspected.

According to the audit results, it was identified that 110 commercial facilities are located at bus stop areas. Of them, 61 were unable to present documents confirming their rights to own or manage the stop complex territory. Their activities will now be legally evaluated and appropriate measures will be taken.

According to the relevant decision of the city administration, all stops are planned to be renovated. For entrepreneurs who have the necessary permits, a mechanism of compensation and allocation of alternative places for their retail outlets has also been предусмотрен.

In short, bus stops are expected to become not “small markets,” but convenient and safe spaces for public transport.
