Robinson Crusoe fox: the wild animal rescued from an island on Baikal

The event at Lake Baikal in Russia again manifested the strong connection between caring people and nature conservation — the wild fox that remained on the solitary island named Ogoy was rescued.

Specialists of the Pribaikalsky National Park in Irkutsk region and city veterinarians conducted a special operation, as a result of which the fox was returned to nature. This event was reported by Pravilamag and the Telegram channel “Baikalich PRO Baikal”.

The fate of the fox did not leave the public indifferent — more than 150 appeals were received by the national park administration. People asked not to leave her alone.

The fox on Ogoy island behaved like Robinson Crusoe — she was not a large wild beast, but hunted small rodents of the Olkhon type (rare red‑listed voles). Also, she asked for food from tourists who visited the island.

“The fox was examined by a veterinarian. It turned out she is healthy, well‑fed and is a young mother‑fox. Then she was transported to the mainland and released in the Elantsyn forestry of the national park,” said scientific staff member of “Zapovednoye Pribaikalye” Tatyana Desyatova.

According to specialists, the fox will now have to give up the pies that tourists gave her and remember the skills of hunting on her own.

It is assumed that the fox settled on the island in winter when Baikal was covered with ice and in spring did not manage to leave the land.
