In the United Kingdom, a court sentenced former vascular surgeon Neil Hopper to 32 months in prison. He cut off his legs due to sexual desire and deceived an insurance company, receiving more than 466 thousand pounds sterling in compensation. This was reported by The Guardian.
In April 2019, he froze his legs using dry ice and was later forced to undergo amputation. The publication notes that this had been his long-standing hidden dream, and he associated it with sexual pleasure.
Hopper told the insurance company that the amputation had been carried out due to sepsis, providing false information. He spent the money received on a camper van, a hot tub, a stove, and other various projects.
The court also found him guilty of fraud and of possessing extreme pornographic materials obtained through an illegal website.
Law enforcement authorities identified Hopper during the investigation into Marius Gustavson, who had posted illegal content and organized extreme body modification surgeries. In 2024, Gustavson was sentenced to life imprisonment for removing male genitals and carrying out other dangerous procedures on people aged 16 and over.
In March 2023, Hopper was suspended from his position in the NHS system, later removed from the medical register. Shortly afterwards, his wife filed for divorce.
