A prisoner deemed mentally ill died in prison at the age of 81

A convict who had been serving a 42-year sentence in the US has died of natural causes, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

According to reports, 81-year-old Fred Singleton was sentenced to death on an electric chair in 1983 for rape, murder, and theft. However, his mental state was not suitable for execution, so the sentence was not carried out.

The court stated that he could not be forced to take medicine due to mental problems. Singleton is listed as the longest-waiting prisoner to face the death penalty in South Carolina.
