A large fire broke out at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on October 18. This was reported by Gulf News.
According to reports, the fire started around 14:30 in the luggage compartment of the airport. Due to the incident, all flights were temporarily suspended, and passengers were evacuated to safe areas. 36 special units, including the airport's internal fire service and the Bangladesh Air Force, were involved in extinguishing the fire.
The airport director, Masudul Hasan Masud, confirmed the situation and stated that emergency measures are being taken. According to him, all the planes were directed to a safe zone.
Kavser Mahmud, a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, stated that the fire engulfed the entire cargo area. Civil aviation, fire services, naval and air forces, and border security units arrived at the scene.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations, work is currently underway to completely extinguish the fire. Flights have been temporarily canceled, and some flights have been diverted to Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram and Osmani International Airport in Silhet.
Significant material damage was observed in the warehouse where the cargo was located. According to Nasir Uddin, director of the Bangladesh Freight Forwarders Association, the area where international courier services' cargo was stored has completely burned down. A fire was also reported in one of the nearby chemical warehouses.
Official information about the deaths or serious injuries has not yet been released. However, an investigation into the cause and source of the fire has begun.
The government and airport administration urged the residents to remain calm, stating that the fire has been brought under control. Nevertheless, flights at Dhaka Airport remain temporarily restricted.
