Chinese engineers have demonstrated another scientific achievement - they have created a jellyfish-shaped "ghost" drone capable of secretly moving underwater. This was reported by South China Morning Post.
This device, developed by a team led by Tao Kai, a researcher at the Faculty of Mechanics and Electrical Engineering at Northwestern Polytechnic University, became known as the "underwater phantom." Scientists note that this drone is no different from a real jellyfish after entering the water. Due to its natural appearance, the drone provides a unique opportunity for covert monitoring of the water, observation of the biological environment, and inspection of underwater infrastructure.
According to Tao Kai, the drone consumes very little energy, makes almost no noise, and its appearance is very similar to a natural jellyfish. These features make it an ideal device for environmental analysis and covert missions in deep waters.
The main part of the jellyfish drone is made of transparent hydrogel electrode material, and its body consists of an umbrella-shaped head and movable tendons. The device has a diameter of 120 millimeters and weighs only 56 grams.
The robot uses an electrostatic hydraulic actuator for movement - this mechanism mimics the natural movements of a real jellyfish. The drone, powered by 28.5 milliwatts, leaves practically no physical or acoustic traces underwater. This allows him to conduct long-term covert observations.
The Meduza-drone is equipped with a miniature camera module and an internal AI chip. This allows it to independently analyze the collected data and, if necessary, send a real-time signal.
Experts believe this innovation could usher in a new era in underwater research, environmental monitoring, and military intelligence. This Chinese project is considered the beginning of a new generation in underwater robotics.
