Plague takes over Congo: thousands of children at risk

The cholera epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo is taking a serious turn. According to official data, 64,427 cases of cholera were registered during the last 9 months of this year. 1,888 patients died from the disease. The most alarming thing is that the majority of patients are children, 14,818 adolescents have been infected, of which 340 have died.

The epidemic has already spread to 17 of the country's 26 provinces. One of the largest centers is the capital, Kinshasa. Experts emphasize the escalation of the situation and the need for emergency measures at the state level.

According to health officials, cholera can be prevented. For this, it is necessary to radically improve the quality of drinking water supply, sanitation, and medical services in high-risk areas. The disease is mainly transmitted through water or food contaminated with the cholera vibrio.

According to the WHO, 1.4 million people die annually in the world due to a lack of clean water and sanitation. Therefore, it is very important to strengthen preventive measures, especially in areas where children live.
