China and South Korea presidents prepare for tense talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping will host South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on a state visit starting Sunday. The visit aims to strengthen ties with Seoul amid tense relations with Japan over Taiwan. Analysts say the Xi-Lee meeting focuses on economic cooperation and tourism development.
This is the second meeting between Xi and Lee in two months, showing China’s interest in reinforcing ties with Seoul. Analysts say the visit highlights how important South Korea is to China.
During the visit, more than 10 agreements in economy, business, and climate are expected to be signed. South Korea says the visit will also cover cooperation in technology, key minerals, and green industries. China is South Korea’s largest trading partner, so Seoul seeks to restore relations.
The meeting will also discuss dialogue and security issues with North Korea. South Korea plans to strengthen diplomatic ties with North Korea and involve China as a mediator. Opportunities for cooperation in artificial intelligence and advanced technology will also be reviewed.
