Official sentenced to death for hiding 13 tons of gold in China

The former mayor of Haihou, China, was convicted of corruption and sentenced to death. During the investigation, the wealth found in the official's house amazed not only the country but the whole world.

During the search, 13.5 tons of pure gold and 23 tons of cash were found in the former official's apartment. Also, his elite real estate and collection of expensive cars located in China and abroad were confiscated for the benefit of the state.

According to the investigation, the official systematically accepted bribes in exchange for obtaining government contracts and formalizing land plots between 2009 and 2019. He accumulated illegal wealth totaling $4.3 billion over 10 years.

The court found him guilty of abuse of office and embezzlement of state funds. This process was noted as one of the largest and most controversial anti-corruption cases in Chinese history.
