UN: World is less safe after US actions
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on January 6, US military intervention in Venezuela violates international law and increases the threat to the entire world. The international community must take a clear position against this.

Over the past weekend, US forces removed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro from power in a surprise operation. Maduro faces four criminal charges in the US, including narco-terrorism, and the vice president has been sworn in as interim president.

UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani emphasized that the military intervention is not a victory for human rights but weakens the international security system. “It sends a signal that powerful states can act as they wish,” she said.

Shamdasani also noted that Venezuela’s future should be determined solely by its people, and that political instability and further militarization will only worsen the human rights situation.
