In Finland, a man took sick leave due to the death of his cat

In Finland, a man received a temporary disability certificate due to the death of his cat. Bild reported this. The incident made many people think: some consider such a situation a natural grief (psychological shock), while others believe that work discipline should come first.

Since the employer did not consider the death of the cat a valid reason, the matter went to court. The cat was suffering from a serious illness, which made euthanasia necessary. The man submitted a sick leave certificate and even a medical report to the workshop where he worked. However, the employer refused to accept the documents, considering them insufficient grounds (a serious reason).

The manager gave him a choice: either return to work or resign. Due to fear, the man returned to work, but eventually he was dismissed for “absence from work without a valid reason.” After that, the cat’s owner filed a lawsuit with the district court in the city of Tampere. The judges sided with the plaintiff, recognizing his position as justified.

The former employer was obliged to pay the man more than 40,000 euros. This amount includes compensation, payments for the sick leave period, and court expenses. However, the man himself could not benefit from these funds, as he passed away before the court decision was announced. As a result, the court ruled to include the 40,000 euros in the inheritance.
