Balloons carrying smuggled cigarettes crash in Poland

In Poland, three hot air balloons carrying a large quantity of smuggled cigarettes crashed near the village of Iwków in the southern region. Law enforcement quickly cordoned off the area and confiscated the findings for investigation. Authorities are currently working to determine the origin of the balloons, who operated them, and the smuggling route, noting an increase in attempts to bypass border controls using balloons, especially near border areas. This incident follows the revelation of a large-scale smuggling scheme earlier this year, which involved over 160 balloons and caused an estimated loss of 1.4 million euros to the state budget.
An unusual incident has occurred in the southern regions of Poland. Three balloons crashed near the settlement of Ivkova, and a large quantity of smuggled cigarettes was found inside them. This was reported by Kommersant.
According to local sources, law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene, immediately cordoned off the area, and seized all findings for investigation. Authorities are currently working to determine where these balloons were launched, who operated them, and the route of the contraband.
Officials note that the use of this method to transport illegal goods has become increasingly frequent recently. In particular, it is reported that there has been a rise in attempts to bypass border controls using balloons in areas near the border.
For information, in late April of this year, a large-scale smuggling scheme was uncovered by the Polish government. According to it, millions of cigarettes were illegally brought into the country using more than 160 balloons.
According to official estimates, this illegal activity caused approximately 1.4 million euros in losses to the state budget. It was determined that a Belarusian citizen led this criminal group.
The investigation is currently ongoing, and the individuals behind this incident as well as their accomplices are being identified.
