Madrid’s Atletico will remove Thibaut Courtois’ photo from the “Walk of Fame” gallery that fans pass before entering the stadium. The criteria for inclusion in the gallery will also be reviewed.
Previously, an unwritten rule was considered to be that a player must have played at least 100 matches for the club. For that reason, for example, despite their service to Atletico, photos of Luis Suarez and Radamel Falcao could not appear on this walk.
Now the Belgian goalkeeper’s photo will not be there either. One of the reasons cited is his close ties with Madrid’s Real.
In addition, Atletico fans are demanding that Hugo Sanchez’s photo be removed as well: the Mexican striker, who played for the club in the first half of the 1980s, has long upset them because in 1985 he moved directly to Real.
