Real deem Guler experiment as Modric replacement a failure

Real Madrid continue working on strengthening the squad and are particularly searching for a new name in midfield. Head coach Xabi Alonso saw Arda Guler as Luka Modric’s future successor, but the Turkish footballer could not adapt to the role previously performed by the Croatian veteran. Real are now looking for a new midfielder who can take on Modric’s functions. Among the candidates is 19-year-old Kees Smit from the Netherlands’ AZ Alkmaar.

At the same time, Arda Guler’s future is not under threat: the club simply want to use him more often in a more comfortable and familiar role.

Interestingly, Luka Modric did not want to leave Real last summer, but the Madrid hierarchy chose a path of relying on younger players.
