Roman Gerus names Safonov Russia’s best goalkeeper

Former captain of Perm’s Amkar, Roman Gerus, named Matvey Safonov the strongest goalkeeper in Russia for 2025. This was reported by euro-football.rureports.

The expert admitted that Safonov did not get much playing time during the season, but stressed that his standout performance in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final fueled talk about the goalkeeper worldwide.

“Some say a penalty shootout is a lottery and the goalkeeper has no impact. But he won the trophy for his team, saving four shots,” Gerus was quoted as saying by VseProSport.

Gerus also added that Safonov has a good chance of becoming PSG’s first-choice keeper, as he looks stronger than his competitors.

The Russian goalkeeper is currently recovering after breaking his hand in the penalty shootout following the match against Flamengo.
