Former goalkeeper Ilya Abayev, known for his spells at Anzhi and Lokomotiv, shared his thoughts on PSG’s goalkeeper rotation. This season, Frenchman Luka Chevalier has featured in more matches, while Russian Matvey Safonov spent a long time on the bench and suffered an injury after a few games. According to Abayev, he would choose Safonov between the two keepers: Matvey is in no way inferior to his rival, and the fight for a starting spot is still ahead. The former keeper also stressed that Safonov still needs to prove himself again, and an immediate return after injury is not guaranteed.
For the record, Safonov saved four penalties in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final on December 17 and also injured his hand in that match. Chevalier, meanwhile, saved two penalties in the French Super Cup on January 8.
