Manchester City moved in the winter transfer window to address a painful weak spot at centre-back. With issues in the heart of defence, the Citizens signed a new player and on Monday officially announced the transfer of Crystal Palace defender Mark Guehi.
The talented English centre-back is becoming part of a long-term project at his new club: he will represent Man City until the summer of 2031. In other words, this is not a “one-season stopgap” — the club is signing him for the future, as if to say: “the plan is ready, and now the defence is rock-solid too.”
One of the most interesting details is Guehi’s shirt-number choice. At his new club, he will wear No. 15. The last City player to wear that number was Eliaquim Mangala. So No. 15 is back on the pitch — and this time it will be carried by a determined, modern centre-back.
For context, Manchester City are currently in 2nd place in the Premier League. At a time when every point is worth its weight in gold in the title race, defensive stability is the team’s “steady nerve.” Guehi’s arrival is aimed at strengthening exactly that: fewer mistakes, more confidence, and fans won’t have to “hold their breath” in every moment.
