The Iranian national team, which successfully qualified for the 2026 World Cup, is considering not participating in the tournament against the backdrop of escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel. This was announced by the head of the country's football federation, Mehdi Toj. reports .
In a television appearance, Toj noted that it is difficult to look forward to the World Cup with great hope after today's events, particularly the attack by the United States. He said the final decision must be made by officials in the sports field.
For information, Iran is supposed to hold all three of its group stage matches in the USA: against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt. There is also a possibility that Iranians will face the US national team in the 1/16 finals, which could create additional organizational problems for FIFA.
At the same time, it was reported that the Iranian championship has been suspended until further notice. Many legionnaires have already left the country or are trying to leave.
