AFC confirmed Iran will play at the World Cup

The Asian Football Confederation says Iran still plans to take part in the 2026 World Cup, despite growing political and security tensions linked to the conflict involving the United States and Israel. AFC secretary general Windsor John said Iran’s football federation has told the confederation it intends to compete. Reports Goal.com.

Questions over Iran’s place in the tournament grew after the team missed a required FIFA planning meeting in Atlanta and after Iranian officials signaled they may avoid traveling to North America. Iran had already secured qualification for the expanded 48-team event, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

John said the situation is highly emotional, but stressed that the final decision belongs to Iran’s own federation. According to him, the latest message received by the AFC is clear: Iran is preparing to go to the World Cup.

The debate intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump warned about possible risks to the safety of Iranian players, while also giving mixed messages about whether they should attend. Iran’s national team responded publicly, insisting that no one has the right to block its participation.

Iran, ranked 20th in the world, is due to face New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt in the group stage. Iranian officials have also urged FIFA to respond to security concerns, arguing that the host nation must guarantee protection for every team at the tournament.
