Ergashev discusses his World Cup dream and the national team’s preparations

Uzbekistan national team goalkeeper Botirali Ergashev spoke about his emotions ahead of the World Cup, the preparation process, the atmosphere within the team and the responsibility facing the goalkeepers. His words clearly reflect the excitement, confidence and ambition of the players before their first World Cup.
In an interview with the UFA press service, Ergashev stressed that participating in the World Cup is a huge dream for every footballer. He said it had also been one of the biggest dreams of his own career.
“Every footballer dreams of playing in the World Cup. I can say that it is one of my biggest dreams,” the goalkeeper said.
Indeed, Uzbekistan’s first appearance in the World Cup finals is a historic event for football in the entire country. At previous World Cups, our fans supported different national teams and watched them on television. Now Uzbekistan itself is taking the stage.
Ergashev particularly highlighted this feeling. He said that until recently he had watched World Cups while supporting other teams, but now he considers it a great blessing that the national team will compete in the tournament itself.
“Until recently, we watched the World Cup while supporting one team or another. Thank God, now we are participating ourselves. It makes people very happy,” he added.
The goalkeeper also recalled that the qualifying campaign was not easy. In his view, every match was difficult and important in its own way. In particular, Utkir Yusupov’s penalty save against North Korea was a hugely significant moment for the team.
“There were no easy games in qualifying. Every match was difficult in its own way. I think the game against North Korea, when Utkir Yusupov saved a penalty, was very important,” Ergashev said.
That moment is rightly remembered as one of the key turning points on the road to qualification. In the journey to major tournaments, a single save, goal or incident can sometimes change an entire history. For goalkeepers, such situations mean even greater responsibility and psychological pressure.
Ergashev also discussed the main objective for the goalkeepers at the World Cup. He said the biggest task for every goalkeeper is to keep a clean sheet. Since the opponents at the World Cup are of a very high level, this will not be easy, but such matches reveal the true quality of goalkeepers.
“The main objective at the World Cup is to keep a clean sheet,” he said.
Botirali also spoke positively about the atmosphere inside the national team. According to him, morale is high, the players are united around a common goal and are preparing seriously for the matches.
“Alhamdulillah, the atmosphere inside the team is excellent. We are preparing for the matches in a positive mood,” Ergashev said.
The goalkeeper also discussed the training workload and preparation process. He said the national team is currently working on adapting to high intensity. The pace at the World Cup will be very fast, so every player must make quick decisions, stay constantly active and be ready for significant pressure.
“We are also doing high-intensity exercises in training. The tempo at the World Cup will be very high, so we need to prepare from now on and adapt to it. I think this is the stage we have to go through,” he said.
This point is particularly important because there is a major difference between Asian football and matches at World Cup level. At the tournament, opponents move faster, attackers take advantage of even limited opportunities and mistakes are punished immediately. The pressure is even greater for a goalkeeper.
Ergashev also said he views playing against top-class attackers as an enjoyable challenge. In his opinion, a player’s true potential is revealed in matches against high-level opponents. It is a major risk, but also an excellent opportunity to prove himself.
“It is also enjoyable to play against high-level attackers. Your potential is revealed more clearly when you face strong opponents. It is a good opportunity to test ourselves,” the goalkeeper said.
Uzbekistan will face strong opponents at the World Cup. In such matches, every action by the goalkeeper can be crucial. Choosing the right position, being ready for shots, organizing the defenders and maintaining mental stability can all become decisive factors.
Ergashev also said the national team would try to demonstrate a strong team performance at the World Cup and prove that it is inferior to no one. He stressed that making the fans happy is a major objective for the team.
“God willing, we will show a team performance at the tournament and prove that we are inferior to no one. We hope to play well and make our fans happy,” he said.
These words reflect the general mood within the national team: the players understand that the opponents are strong, but they have no intention of stepping onto the pitch in fear. Instead, they want to test themselves, defend the honour of their country and give the fans a performance worthy of their support.
At the end of the interview, Ergashev said that among the young players he particularly enjoys watching Abbosbek Fayzullayev. He noted that Abbos’s dribbling, creative moves and unconventional decisions in attack also create difficulties for goalkeepers.
“Among the young players, I particularly enjoy Abbos Fayzullayev’s performances. His dribbling and creativity also create difficulties for goalkeepers,” Ergashev said.
Abbosbek Fayzullayev has become one of the brightest players in the national team in recent years. His speed, technical ability and creative thinking have added a new dimension to Uzbekistan’s attack. The goalkeeper’s special praise also shows how dangerous Abbos can be in training.
Botirali Ergashev’s interview revealed the team’s mentality ahead of the World Cup. The dream has come true, but the main test is now beginning. Qualifying for the World Cup is history. Performing well there is the new challenge.
As Uzbekistan’s national team prepares to step onto the world stage for the first time, every player, goalkeeper and coach carries great responsibility. As Ergashev said, the team will try to prove on the pitch that it is inferior to no one. The fans are eagerly awaiting the result of this belief, hard work and dream.
