By 2035, the share of autonomous trucks in freight transport in Russia will reach 19%

The Russian government has approved a concept for the development of the autonomous freight market until 2035. According to the document, the share of highly automated vehicles (HAV) in road freight transport is expected to reach 19 percent. This project was developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, the Digital Transport and Logistics association, and major freight companies. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports.

Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin noted that autonomous trucks are already being tested on the route from Saint Petersburg to Kazan, and their total mileage has exceeded 17 million kilometers. By 2035, the fleet of autonomous trucks is planned to reach 57,000 units. Such vehicles can cover up to 300,000 kilometers per year, which is twice as much as conventional trucks.

The implementation of the concept will serve to gradually increase the level of automation. In two years, it is expected that vehicles capable of operating without a driver in the cabin will appear on the roads. Currently, the Ministry of Transport is preparing a federal draft law on HAV, and amendments to traffic regulations are also planned.

A unified identification system based on ERA-GLONASS will be used to assess technological maturity. Companies such as Yandex, Navio, and KamAZ are participating in the project. The main advantage of autonomous trucks is higher efficiency and reduced maintenance costs due to predictable operating modes. One autonomous truck can replace two conventional trucks with drivers.
