The new Pope Leo XIV was inaugurated in the Vatican City. An estimated 150,000 people gathered in St. Peter's Square to witness the grand ceremony.
At the beginning of the ceremony, the new pontiff rode around the square in a special "popemobile" car and met with thousands of people. After that, Leo XIV celebrated Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, beginning his spiritual career. The new Pope was also presented with the symbols of papal authority - the "fisherman's ring" and a pallium made of sheep's wool with a cross on it.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Leo XIV called on the people of the whole world to achieve peace and unity. He sharply criticized the current economic system, which "consumes natural resources and pushes the poorest people to the margins."
More than 150 delegations from different countries and religious denominations came to this historic event in the Vatican. The ceremony was attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, King Felipe VI of Spain, King Philippe of Belgium and other high-ranking guests.
After the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to hold a special meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A meeting with US Vice President Jay Dee Vance is scheduled for tomorrow morning. It should be noted that Zelensky and Vance shook hands during the ceremony. This is their first personal meeting since the controversial incident at the White House in late February.
For information, the new Pope, American Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected head of the Catholic Church on May 8 and chose a new name for himself - Leo XIV. His predecessor, Pope Francis, died on April 21 at the age of 88.
