A giant glacier broke apart in the mountains of Tajikistan

Another effect of climate change was observed in Tajikistan - part of the large glacier in the Ismail Samani Range separated and moved downward. According to the Emergency Situations Service, the incident occurred on October 25 at 11:00 a.m. in the territory of the Kalai Labi Ob rural community of the Tajikabad district, near the village of Saftab.

It was determined that the separated glacier was approximately 2 kilometers long, 25 meters high, and 150-200 meters wide. Despite the fact that a large layer of ice slid down the gorge, the incident did not cause damage to the population and local infrastructure, no one was injured, and the incident ended without consequences.

Experts attribute this process to the global climate change and the steady increase in air temperature observed in recent years. Previously, such migrations were mainly observed in the high Himalayas of India or Nepal, but now they are also frequently observed in the glaciers of Central Asia.

Glaciologists believe that if heavy rain falls in the coming days or the temperature rises again, it is likely that another part of the glacier will separate. This can pose a certain risk, especially for farms operating in the Gulrez community near the village of Qasa-i-Nabi.

According to experts' calculations, if this glacier melts completely, approximately 7-8 million cubic meters of water will form. However, this process is expected to be gradual, and there is currently no risk of severe flooding.

The phenomenon shows that the impact of climate change on mountain glaciers has intensified. Scientists believe that such processes will increase in the future and emphasize the need for regular monitoring of environmental risks in the regions.
